Introducing HEIKN Labs

HEIKN Labs is a studio for cinematic portraits and considered research. In practice, that means two things: we make short, deliberate films about one person at a time, and we publish the research behind them — the questions we asked, the choices we made, what we noticed while we were paying attention.

We’re starting small on purpose. Twelve portraits a year, no more. That number isn’t a limitation we’re apologizing for — it’s the point. A studio that takes on more than it can sit with ends up promoting instead of studying, and we’d rather be the second thing.

Who this is for

We work with solo builders and quiet founders — people who are doing real, specific work and would rather be seen carefully than promoted loudly. If your instinct is to explain what you do in one sentence and change the subject, we’re probably a good fit.

How a commission starts

Every project begins with sitting, not shooting. Before a camera is involved, there’s a conversation, then more waiting than either of us expects. We’re looking for the unguarded second after the question — the moment most footage cuts around. That second is usually the portrait.

What’s next

This is the first entry in what will become an ongoing archive — a record of the studio’s work and the thinking behind it, in English and in Korean. If you’re curious whether your project is a fit, write to the studio. We reply within three working days.
